LAYA RANJANI is a dynamic Carnatic percussion ensemble founded in 2012 and led by the accomplished Mridangam exponent, Vidwan G S Nagaraj. The ensemble is dedicated to the art of Tala Vadya (percussion), showcasing the rich mathematical intricacies and aesthetic depth of Indian rhythmic traditions. It comprises of young musicians and experienced artists of Karnataka. The group has given many performances all over India.
True to its name, which translates to "Delighting in Rhythm", Laya Ranjani aims to present complex Laya structures in a manner that is both technically profound and musically pleasing to the audience. The ideology of the ensemble is to showcase the rich and diverse depth of rhythmic structures keeping in mind the musicology and aesthetics. The team tries to blend rhythm and music into one entity and tries to explore different ways in which Carnatic music can be presented without compromising the traditional values. Each concert performed by the group showcases a different concept of percussion ensemble.
The ensemble typically features a vibrant array of Carnatic percussion instruments, including the Mridangam, Khanjira, Ghatam, Thevil, Tabla, Dholak, Dholki, Morsing, and often includes Konnakol (vocal percussion). They are known for creating thematic presentations that highlight the conversational interplay between these instruments. Beyond their concert performances at prestigious sabhas and festivals across India, Laya Ranjani also serves as a platform for fostering the next generation of percussionists, maintaining a strong commitment to the preservation and evolution of South Indian classical rhythm.
